Wild Bunch has successfully acquired the German distribution rights for "Balandrau: Where the Fierce Wind Blew," a gripping Spanish survival thriller. This acquisition is one of several international sales deals orchestrated by Filmax, the film's international sales agent, during the Cannes Marché du Film. In addition to Germany, the film has found distribution partners in Latin America (Star Films), the CIS region (Nashe Kino), Australia and New Zealand (Palace Films), and the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Foxx Media Group). International airlines will also feature the film, thanks to a deal with Encore Inflight.
The film's strong performance in its home market, with over 200,000 admissions in Spain, serves as a significant credential for Filmax as they continue to present it to buyers in Cannes. "Balandrau" is inspired by a true event from December 30, 2000, when a group of mountaineers faced a ferocious blizzard on the Balandrau mountain in the Catalan Pyrenees, leading to a harrowing struggle for survival and a frantic rescue effort. The movie, directed by Fernando Trullols in his feature-length debut, stars Álvaro Cervantes, Bruna Cusí, and Marc Martínez. Filmax's Head of International, Iván Díaz, expressed satisfaction with the considerable interest and positive reception the film has garnered since its screening in Berlin.
The narrative of "Balandrau" reminds us of the raw power of nature and the indomitable spirit of humanity in the face of extreme adversity. It underscores the courage of those who brave unforgiving landscapes and the unwavering dedication of rescue teams. This cinematic portrayal of survival against overwhelming odds celebrates resilience and the profound human connection that emerges in moments of crisis, inspiring audiences to appreciate both the fragility and strength of life.
